My soft-top is fixed onto the back frame with Velcro… And over time (the 5 years I’ve had my car on the road), the ‘fleecy’ side of the soft-top (the part that sticks to the Velcro on the frame) has worn thin and is non-existent in some areas. So I had a couple of options:
- Use poppers (Tenax type)
- Re-Velcro
And let's not forget, I use the soft-top less than five times per year.
So, back to the plot… I’ve seen some soft-tops with poppers, and I’ve heard nothing negative from owners who have these; but, I’m not a fan because, in my simplistic way of looking at things, the air pressure on the top, it being less the faster you go, causes more ‘lift’, therefore more pressure or ‘pulling’ on the fixings (Velcro or poppers.)
Because of this, and my possibly flawed assumption that the maximum points-of-stress [if I’d popper’d], will be around the material lip on the poppers, I decided to take the easier and less traumatic option and replaced the Velcro.
Here’s how I did it:
The existing Velcro was 2 cm wide; the frame is 3.5 cm wide. So I’m not utilising 1.5 cm of contact/securing area. Also, there’s no Velcro on the soft-top side of things; that’s some kind of fleece material sewn into the material.
For the repair, I used 5 cm “VELCRO Brand Heavy Duty Stick On Industrial Extra Strong Double Sided Hook & Loop Self Adhesive Tape” [phew
] to replace the old stuff; and, although it was adhesive-backed, I fixed it in place with contact adhesive.

I'm really pleased with the result, and the top is much, much more secure. And the icing for me was, I didn’t have to have silver ‘dots’ breaking up the sleek lines.
